Mills Messenger - November 4, 2018

Greetings Mountain Lions!

Since the Messenger didn’t go out last week, there are a few things I want to mention from the past couple weeks at Mills......

The Water Boil was another reminder of how wonderful our school community truly is. Walking down the halls of our school, and seeing cases and cases of bottled water for our staff and our kids was just amazing. Thank you to each of you that took time to donate water to Mills! I am so very fortunate to be a part of this community.

Congrats to Mrs. Garza and the 5th Grade Choir for a great performance. The show featured a fall theme complete with Halloween tunes. Thank you, Mrs. Garza, for all of your hard work and dedication to our students!

A big thank you to our awesome Monster Mash team for putting on an unforgettable evening for our 5th graders!

A huge thank you to Amy Elizondo for all of your hard work, and a special shout out to my co-president Karien Early who came right off of Fall Festival and then worked so hard to make sure everyone had a wristband for Monster Mash! And thank you to the rest of the Monster Mash team: Nadia Zuniga, Adriana Bernal, Zaira Nathan, Karla Gowing, Christine Szczesny, Kelly McKinney, Lina Dotson, Carrie Lumb-Dewey, Melonie Laney, Nathalie Hennessee, Tonia McKenzie, Katy Andre, Angi Nungaray & Julie Campbell. Also, thank you to all of the families that donated goods and volunteered.

I also wanted to extend another huge thank you to our Fall Festival Sponsors. This event could not be successful without you all. Thank you for supporting Mills! Modern Dentisry, Flash Tats, Solutions Pharmacy, Mr. Dream Home, We Rock the Spectrum, Kuk Sool Won, Petite Dental, OrangeTheory, Epic Fun, National Elite, Emler Swim School, AT&T, Austin Yard Cards and Christian Automotive.

Veterans' Day

Mills celebrates and honors veterans with a patriotic sing-along. This year, it will be on Friday, November 9th, at 2:00. If your family has a veteran in town, we would love for them to join us. We would like to acknowledge all the armed service members in our Mills' Family with an Honor Gallery in our main hall. We are inviting you to send a photo of members of your family who have served in any of the armed services. Include their name, relationship to which Mills' students and the branch of service. You can send the photos to school with your child or drop them off in the office, and we will post the photos in the hall beginning outside the cafeteria.

Please make sure to check out our PTA Calendar for important dates coming up!

Parent Workshop: Creatively Connecting with Your Child and Increasing Cooperation

Creative Action has partnered with Mills for programs like Courage to Stand (4th grade) and Courage in Action (5th grade) and has named us a Brave School. Because Mills is a Brave School, we have opportunities to participate in their community events.

Creative Action will be hosting a parent workshop at Becker Elementary from 5:30 to 7:00 pm on Tuesday, November 27th. This workshop is for YOU, the parent. The goal of this workshop is to provide opportunities for parents to connect, reflect and learn from each other. You will brainstorm and strengthen your toolkit for responding to tricky moments when you struggle with gaining cooperation from your child. If you need to bring your children, we will provide childcare, and pizza will be provided for all. If you plan to bring your child(ren), be sure to RSVP for child ticket(s) as well as your adult ticket.

It's not too late - you can still join Mills PTA

Thank you to those 403 parents, teachers, and grandparents who have already renewed your membership or joined Mills PTA for the first time. Our goal is to reach 445 members for the 2018-2019 school year. If you enjoyed our Fall Festival and/or 5th Grade Monster Mash, you know that our PTA works hard at planning events to bring the Mills community together. Joining PTA means supporting Mills, your children, and the CommYOUnity. All of you are creating a valued partnership between family, educators and children. PTA provides opportunities to meet others who have the same interests as you. By sharing common concerns, you will feel more empowered. Being part of PTA connects families and schools and results in parental support and make school involvement easier. If you haven’t already joined there is still time to become a member and gain all the rewards from being a part of PTA. You can give as much or as little of your time as you want – there is no obligation. Come join us and show your support for our Mountain Lion.

What is included in the $10.00 dues (per member)?
* Your dues also help support PTA-based services such as the Mills Messenger and Website.
* Being a part of PTA also gets you money saving discounts at places like Schlitterbahn, Six Flags, Great Wolf Lodge, Staples and more. Go to and for more information.

How do I join if I want to pay cash or check (payable to Mills PTA)?
* Use the PTA Envelope that you may have received from your teacher, complete the member information and return form to the office or your child’s teacher with payment.
* Grab a PTA envelope from the office, complete and submit with payment in the envelope.

How do I join if I want to use my debit/credit card?
* Use this link to join via our online store.

We look forward to a great year for the PTA in 2018 – 2019. Contact Jenny Chang with any questions at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
